Frequently asked questions

What is Benexia?

Benexia is a 100% chia-dedicated, vertically integrated ingredients company supplying chia-derived ingredients — including seeds, fiber, protein, oil and microencapsulated omega-3 — to food, beverage and nutrition manufacturers worldwide. Since 2005, we have controlled the entire value chain, from regenerative farming to finished ingredients.

Are Benexia ingredients EFSA Novel Food approved?

Yes. Benexia was the first chia seed and chia oil to obtain EFSA approval as a Novel Food, in 2009 and 2014 respectively. Following the initial approval, Benexia obtained Novel Food status for chia protein and chia fiber under Article 10(1) of Regulation (EU) 2015/2283; they are included in the Union list of authorized novel foods established in Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/2470.

Are Benexia ingredients suitable for Ready-to-Eat (RTE) and Ready-to-Drink (RTD) applications?

Yes. Benexia ingredients are safe for Ready-to-Eat (RTE) and Ready-to-Drink (RTD) applications. They undergo a validated, organic, chemical-free "kill step" using non-ionizing radiofrequency technology — ensuring safety without irradiation, UV or ethylene oxide (ETO). The process is recognized by the FDA and the European Union as a validated Log-5 reduction method.

Is Benexia a Certified B Corporation?

Yes. Benexia is a Certified B Corporation™, part of a global community of companies meeting high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. The certification reflects our commitment to regenerative agriculture, operational integrity and long-term value for people, communities and the planet.

How does Benexia grow chia using zero irrigation water?

Benexia’s chia is grown 100% rain-fed. Across our partner farms in Bolivia, Argentina and Paraguay, the crop relies entirely on natural rainfall under regenerative, dryland practices, so cultivation uses zero irrigation water — which is why our agricultural footprint reports zero water to grow.

Where does Benexia grow its chia?

Benexia grows chia through a network of family-owned partner farms in Bolivia, Argentina and Paraguay under regenerative, rain-fed practices. Seed is received and finely cleaned at processing plants close to the growing sites, then sent to our facility in Arica, Chile, to be processed into ingredients — a fully traceable, vertically integrated supply chain.

What is the difference between black and white chia seed?

Black and white chia seeds are nutritionally and biologically equivalent, differing mainly in coat color due to a single recessive gene in the white variety. Black seed is more common and may contain slightly higher antioxidant levels, while differences in oil and fatty-acid content depend on environmental factors rather than color.

What consumer-facing retail brands does Benexia own?

Benexia owns two consumer (B2C) brands. Seeds of Wellness® (SOW) is a functional food and lifestyle brand of sustainable chia products — Chia Milk, Chia Oil, Chia Superfood Powder, Organic Chia Fiber Flour and black and white chia seeds. ChiaMucil® is a premium wellness and dietary-supplement brand for digestive and cardiometabolic health, built on a functional fiber blend of Benexia’s chia fiber matrix with chicory root fiber.

What chia ingredients does Benexia produce?

Benexia produces five B2B ingredient lines from chia: XIA Seeds (whole black and white seed), XIA Fiber (a ~56% fiber concentrate), XIA Protein (a complete plant protein with all nine essential amino acids), XIA Oil (cold-pressed oil with >63% omega-3 ALA) and ALA Powder (water-dispersible microencapsulated omega-3).

What certifications does Benexia hold?

Benexia’s processing facility holds FSSC 22000 (GFSI-recognized) certification and EU, USDA/NOP and COR organic standards; its ingredients are Non-GMO, gluten-free, Kosher and Halal certified. Benexia is a Certified B Corporation™ and a member of GOED (The Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3).

What does XIA Protein offer compared with other plant-based proteins?

XIA Protein is a high-quality, complete vegan protein with an excellent PDCAAS score of 0.95. As a 100% natural whole-food concentrate, it also delivers fiber, omega-3 and calcium, with a smoother, grit-free texture.

Can XIA Fiber replace gums and stabilizers?

Yes. XIA Fiber provides binding, water- and oil-retention and heat- and extrusion-stable structure that can replace thickeners, stabilizers and emulsifiers such as xanthan gum, cellulose and CMC — with a single clean-label, natural ingredient.

How does XIA Oil compare with other omega-3 sources?

XIA Oil is a cold-pressed oil rich in omega-3 ALA, containing 63% of this essential fatty acid along with a higher natural antioxidant content for added stability and health benefits. It offers a superior, clean nutty flavor compared with flax or marine oils.
